During the course of my degree, I gained intrinsic knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and all the elements involved in order to achieve peak performance. I was a member of Hartpury College’s Elite Equine Academy allowing me weekly access to my own personal trainer, sports therapist, nutritionist and psychologist. This opportunity allowed me to develop a passion for sports performance and as a result I decided to undertake a dissertation research project looking at the effects of lower back pain in the dressage rider on performance. The results from this study catalysed my desire to work with athletes and help them achieve the best results possible.
Furthermore, through my employment at the Hartpury Equine and Canine Therapy Centre, I independently undertook all therapies on offer at the Centre including: using a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machine; massage techniques; stretching and hot/cold therapies. I was also responsible in the decision making of the correct rehabilitation programme for each of the horses in my care. The experience and knowledge gained here further fuelled my ambition to help both rider and horse in achieving their optimum performance. As a result, after finishing at Hartpury College I enrolled on a Sports Massage Diploma with the vision of becoming a sports therapist.
I worked as the Sports Therapist for the U20 Springbok Rugby team during their stay in Manchester for the Rugby U20 World cup. This position has been invaluable as it has enabled me to further my knowledge of sports injuries in athletes performing at an elite level within their chosen sport. I feel privileged to be able to work with physiotherapists who are well respected within their field and I feel this is reflecting in the quality of my work.
